Purple toothwort

Whilst looking for otter shit yesterday evening I came across this amazing growth on a decaying elder trunk. Apparently Purple toothwort is an occasional 'exotic' that turns up in Hampshire and other discrete parts of the UK. A truly cracking plant!

I've often seen these on old trees down by the Cam - strange and beautiful, aren't they?

There's some big patches of it in Sheffield Botanical Gardens - growing on the roots of a poplar.

They pop up in Dutch parksites occasionely. I fotographed mine in a park in The Hague. On my blog I didn't give details for fear of vandalism
